Purdue started their fall season with a 3-0 win against Oral Roberts in the first match of the Mortar Board Premier.
Sophomore middle blocker Blake Mohler and junior outside hitter Sherridan Atkinson were in the zone, knocking down a shared 22 kills in 32 attempts.
After a short back and forth in the first set, the Boilers held leads over the Golden Eagles until the third set. Oral Roberts held a lead over the Boilers until Purdue went ahead 15-14 and didn't look back.
"Obviously you win the first two, there's a tendency to come out a little complacent and the team that lost two comes motivated," head coach Dave Shondell said. "That's what happened here."
Shondell elected to give a few newcomers some experience with NCAA volleyball, including freshmen defensive specialists Julianna Reisinger and Jena Otec and outside hitter Caitlyn Newton, who only had some scrimmage experience in April and traveled with the team to Europe.
Otec was nervous for her first match, but put together a strong game.
"I think that I passed pretty decently, but I still need to improve my defense for the next match," she said. "Hopefully next match and the match tomorrow (I become less nervous)."
The Boilers face Cleveland State tonight at 7 p.m. in Holloway Gymnasium.
