A Boilermaker received his first ever weekly Big Ten award.
Junior Gergely Madarasz is this week's Big Ten athlete of the week after going 2-0 in his singles matches and 3-0 in his doubles, helping the Boilers to defeat Tulsa.
The No. 2 singles player defeated No. 13 California's Filip Bergevi (6-2, 6-4) and SMU's No. 56-ranked Hunter Johnson (7-5, 7-5). Paired with freshman Athell Bennett, the pair defeated California's team of Bjorn Hoffmann and J.T. Nishimura (6-4), SMU's Tony Russell and Ronald Slobodchikov (7-6) and Tulsa's Jarod Hing and Daniel Santos (6-4).
He is an Academic all-Big Ten honoree and the first Boiler to receive the award since senior teammate Benjamin Ugarte did in January 2016.
The Boilers play next at 7 p.m. Friday at Northwestern.
