Members of the nation’s fifth-ranked recruiting class saw action for the first time as Boilermakers on Friday as Purdue softball kicked off its fall exhibition schedule with a doubleheader.

Purdue softball won only three of its last 17 games, none of which were by more than 3 runs. In the penultimate series of their season, the Boilermakers needed a triumph.

With both teams looking to end their conference seasons strong, this weekend’s series is slated to be extremely important for both teams as they continue to try to earn their best ranking heading into the Big Ten Tournament this May.

Purdue cut the Indiana lead to just 1 run after trailing by 4. But the Hoosiers responded by hitting back-to-back solo home runs, crushing the Boilermakers’ chances at a comeback.

A tough test on the road for Purdue would have proved to be a major upset in the college softball world, but the Boilermakers’ late game scoring fell short in their efforts to pull off a surprise victory.
